Description

St James Quarter is one of the most significant city centre transformations underway in the U.K. A new quarter of the city, it completes the city’s distinctive offer with a stunning new shopping galleria with over 80 new brands, an enticing mix of restaurant and bars, a luxury W Hotel Edinburgh, a boutique Everyman Cinema, a Roomzzz Aparthotel, and an unrivalled guest experience providing customers with an enviable events programme in a range of new and attractive public spaces.

Project Scope

Specified for a number of void in fill applications across the project, expanded polystyrene (EPS) offers outstanding long-term compressive benefits from 20-190kPa depending on load requirement. Weighing less than 1% of concrete and no compaction or curing times to consider, EPS is a lightweight, easy to install material which weighs in as a cost effective choice reducing labour, time, materials (such as steel reinforcements) and machinery requirements ordinarily required by traditional fill materials.

EPS Void Fill Key Features & Benefits

    • High compressive strength

    • Lightweight – less than 1% weight of concrete

    • Quick/easy install – cut on site

    • Hydrophobic

    • Reduced labour costs

    • Reduced Static Load

    • Negligible Settlement

    • 100% recyclable

EPS Applications for this project

These applications utilise the Engineered Foam Products EPS70-500 range:

    • Cinema Terraced Stadium Seating

    • Basement Void Fillers

    • Formwork Applications

    • Landscape Terraces

    • Rooftop Ramps and Planters

    • Stairs and Feature Staircase

The Project

Bespoke EPS requirements were supplied profiled, labelled and cut to size offsite to reduce onsite cutting and wastage and speed up on-site install.

Finished parts were supplied on polybearers removing timber pallets and reducing on-site waste.
Profiled parts included simple cuboid shapes and complex ones such as formwork and ramps requiring a continuous slope. Larger installations such as the cinema terrace required a number of smaller parts to complete the install, all of which were labelled off site to speed up onsite install.

Once in situ the EPS parts were then covered in a thin layer of concrete ready for completion.
