A year after marking 50 years at its Livingston site, Engineered Foam Products (EFP) is celebrating the same milestone at its Northampton manufacturing site and Head Office.
Established in 1974, the site has been a leader in innovation, quality, and adaptability, playing a vital role in the company’s success.
A Legacy of Transformation
The Northampton plant began its journey as Trondex Ltd in 1974, the result of a merger between Trend Moulding & Packaging Ltd and Rondopack the year before. From its earliest days, the site was recognised as a leader in expanded polystyrene (EPS) manufacturing, primarily producing packaging for consumer electronics and white good appliance industries.
The following decades brought significant evolution and opportunities for growth. Ownership changes saw Trondex Ltd acquired by Tuscarora in 1995, later becoming part of SCA Packaging in 2001. In 2012, the site transitioned to DS Smith ownership before returning to private hands under Olympus Partners in 2020. Each change brought new challenges, new investments, and new opportunities to diversify the business.
Innovating Beyond the Mould
From its early focus on EPS packaging, the Northampton site has continuously evolved its capabilities. Over the years, new materials such as EPE, EPP, and Arcel were introduced to meet growing market demands. It’s been our materials and design innovation that have paved the way for new applications in industries like automotive, HVAC and more recently construction.
The complexity of the high value mouldings and component parts EFP manufacture today demonstrates how far the technology and EFP’s technical knowhow has come over the last 50 years. This transformation highlights EFP’s ability to adapt and grow, which over the years has been driven by its people, investment, and a focus on Sustainable Innovation.
The People Behind the Milestone
While technology and materials have propelled progress, it is the people at Northampton who remain vital to its success. From the design team’s ingenuity to the production floor’s dedication, all employees have embraced change, learned new skills, and worked hard to meet the high expectations of a demanding and varied custom base.
David Davies Northampton Plant Manager commented:
“Half a century, quite simply an amazing milestone. A lot has changed except the dedication, commitment and capability of our outstanding workforce. It’s with much pride as Plant Manager that I celebrate your achievements. We’ve come a long way, but our journey isn’t yet complete. Each project brings new challenges and opportunities to succeed.Well done to everyone for securing this milestone and building a strong foundation for future success.”
David Vallance CEO Commented:
